10 Dec Martabe Gold Mine Sends an Emergency Response Team For Disaster in Aceh
Batangtoru, 10 December 2016 – As many as 6 (six) people comprising 5 (five) members of Martabe Gold Mine Emergency Response Team and one paramedic from ISOS who run duties at Martabe Gold Mine are dispatched to the earthquake disaster location at Pidie Jaya, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. The Martabe Gold Mine Emergency Response Team made the first emergency response team among other teams from private companies that arrived on the disaster area. This team departed on December 8, 2016 and arrived on the disaster site on the same day.
During its presence at the earthquake disaster location, the Martabe Gold Mine Emergency Response Team operated under the Disaster Awareness Energy and Mineral Resources Team under coordination with the National SAR Agency.
Tim Duffy, the President Director of Martabe Gold Mine said: “The management and employees of Martabe Gold Mine express our condolences for the disaster that impacted the people of Pidie Jaya. We pray that the residents who suffer from the disaster to be patient and strong in dealing with this concerning situation. We hope and expect that the presence of the Martabe Gold Mine Emergency Response Team at the disaster area can help to alleviate the burden of the disaster survivors”.
On December 7, 2016, at 05.03 Western Indonesia Time, an earthquake with 6.5 on the Richter scale shook the District of Pidie Jaya, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam. The earthquake happened when the local residents were prepared for the dawn prayer. The strongest effect of the earthquake was felt at Pidie Jaya.
Earthquake center was located at 5.25 North and 96.24 East, on land at 18 kilometers southeast of Sigli, Pidie, and 2 kilometers north of Meureudu, Pidie Jaya, at the depth of 15 km. The earthquake center which was located on land prevented this earthquake from causing tsunami. The earthquake effect was also felt at the nearby districts such as Pidie, Bireuen, to Banda Aceh, Langsa, and Simeuleu Island.
The residents of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam has experienced earthquake several times. One earthquake with the largest impact occurred on December 26, 2004, where an earthquake with Tsunami tragedy hit Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam region, destroying thousands of builidings and caused approximately hundreds of thousands of casualties.
Martabe Gold Mine Overview
Martabe Gold Mine is located to the west side of Sumatra Island, in Batang Toru Sub-district, North Sumatra Province, with an area of 1,639 km2, under the sixth generation of Contract of Work (“CoW”) which was signed in April 1997. PT Agincourt Resources manages Martabe Gold Mine that has a resource of 7.4 million ounces of gold and 69 million ounces of silver and began its full production in early 2013, with an annual capacity of 250,000 ounces of gold and 2-3 million ounces of silver.
More than two thousand people are currently working at Martabe Gold Mine, 70% of them are recruited from fifteen villages around the mine and other nearby areas.
