Martabe Gold Mine Donates a Vehicle for Animal Rescue of Barumun Sumatran Tigers Sanctuary

Medan, 11 August 2021 – PT Agincourt Resources (PTAR), the operator of Martabe Gold Mine, supports Barumun Sumatran Tiger Sanctuary by donating a unit of Animal Rescue car of Single Cabin Toyota Hilux to Yayasan Persamuhan Bodhicitta Mandala Medan (YPBMM). The handover of the vehicle worth IDR 430 million completed with an animal cage and rescue equipment was carried out symbolically by PTAR Senior Manager Government Relations, Irwanto Situmorang to the Chairman of YPBMM, Eddy and the Patron of YPBMM the Monk Nyanaprathama Mahasthavira at the YPBMM office in Medan, Wednesday (11/8).

YPBMM is a non-profit Non-Government Organization based in Medan which engages in conservation and community development fields. YPBMM has developed Barumun Nagari Wildlife Sanctuary (BNWS) located in Padang Lawas District, since 2015. The location is developed as a wildlife conservation area, especially elephants and Sumatran tigers. In addition, the community development program is also carried out in 16 villages around the conservation area.

PTAR Director External Relations, Sanny Tjan stated that PTAR’s support to Barumun Sumatran Tiger Sanctuary is in line with the company’s strategic measures in preserving and utilizing the added value of biodiversity, which is one of the key efforts to maintain the balance of the ecosystem and flora or fauna habitat. “This vehicle support is to reinforce the animal rescue activities so that the biodiversity level remains high and it can continue to sustain the community and their lives,” said Sanny. 

Sanny explained that the parts or accessories consisting of the tiger cage, communication radio, full-set of canvas tent to protect the cage, animal net, and other standard equipment have been installed on the vehicle. “The specifications have been following the Regulation of Director General of Natural Resources Conservation and Ecosystem so that the Sumatran Tigers rescue efforts run well,” said Sanny.

Sanny revealed to YPBMM that this support started with the cooperation of the Sumatran tiger release of Sri Nabila to Gunung Leuser National Park on 3 November 2020. PTAR continues the partnership with YPBMM by conserving the Sumatran tigers.

Meanwhile, the Patron of YPBMM, the Monk Nyanaprathama Mahasthavira in his speech expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the support and motivation both from the Government and PT Agincourt Resources. “Hopefully through this support, our goal to conserve can be achieved,” said the Monk. Especially to rescue tigers in Barumun Sanctuary.

The conservation program of Sumatran tigers managed by YPBMM is conducted based on the Decree of Director General of Natural Resources Conservation and Ecosystem No: SK.373/KSDAE/SET/KSA.2/9/2016 dated 30 September 2016 concerning the Determination of the Sumatran Tiger Sanctuary in Batu Nanggar Village, Batang Onang, Padang Lawas District. Following such approval, the conservation activities are fully under the coordination of Natural Resources Conservation Centre (Balai Besar Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam/BBKSDA) of North Sumatra which has programs to rescue, rehabilitate, and release the Sumatran Tigers (Panthera Tigris).

PTAR Senior Manager Corporate Communications, Katarina Siburian Hardono added that the support given is one of PTAR’s efforts in supporting and enforcing biodiversity management in North Sumatra. ”This is proof of PTAR’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability, by maintaining the flora and fauna sustainability, especially the conservation of endangered animals in North Sumatra,” said Katarina.
