Planning for sustainable development at the Martabe Gold Mine commenced well before the construction of the project with the implementation of a comprehensive baseline environmental monitoring programme and a diverse range of environmental and social impact studies.
At PT Agincourt Resources we believe that the quality of environmental management at our operations is fundamental to our long-term success as a mining company. Protection of the environment is our priority and it is our goal to minimise our environmental impact by adopting world’s leading practices in our activities.
Environmental impact assessment is the process of assessing potential environmental and social impacts resulting from a development and identifying controls for their success. Indonesian law requires a comprehensive environmental and social impact assessment to be completed for all large mining projects, known as AMDAL.
The AMDAL assessment for the Martabe Gold Mine was produced by consultants with reference to 38 individual environmental and social studies, and was approved by the Indonesian Government in 2008, allowing the commencement of the project.
Since the AMDAL approval, various additional studies and reports have been completed in support of sustainable management at Martabe Gold Mine, and this process will be ongoing over the life of the mine. Our environmental management performance has been strong. The site was awarded a Blue rating in the Indonesian Government PROPER environmental assessment programme, meaning full compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and permit conditions.
We have continued to set industry leading practice in the management of waste rock and tailings, and maintained support for a river health monitoring program conducted by the University of North Sumatra. We also received a Pratama award from The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources for environmental management in 2015.
